Reframe Rejections.
Listening to No is a fact of life. Learning to deal with rejections is an essential life skill. We all go through rejections in our personal endeavors, professional, or in relationships. What matters is what happens next after hearing no.
Rejection hurts. There is no way of sugarcoating that. Researchers believe sometimes pain is equal to that of physical pain. It attacks our need for acceptance and belonging. Like all the things in life, all that happens to you may not be under your control but how you respond to it is.
Here are four effective strategies to shape better mindset about rejections,
No does not mean you can't do it.
You know your skills, abilities, experience better than anyone. How can someone else gets to decide what you can and can not do? Last year I'd written to about 10 VC firms about being their coaching partner to founders, 8 of them said no. But two of them it worked. They wanted to work with me. Its better to so things with someone who wants to do things with you.
No, its not about you.
Don't take rejections personally. It does not define who you are or can be. It can be about timing, opportunity, misaligned priorities, different needs, and desires etc. I am working with a client to develop their product strategy. The same client said no to me two years ago due to lack of funding.
No, its not a singular direction.
Rejection is not final. It does not tell you that path ends there. No can mean not now(timing, constraints), not yet(timing, experience, skills?), not here. When someone says no to you, it just means you can't do it with them, now.
Rejection and resiliency
We all want to be better everyday. Rejection gives us an opportunity to think what could have been better? Reframing rejection to find learning opportunities build long term resilience. Use learnings from rejections as a stepping stone to growth. #GrowthMindset
