How does a Society die?
World around me shook last Friday as I was reviewing teams deliverables in a morning standup. It had nothing to do with the work that shook me, it was the ground on which I was standing. First I thought, my coffee is funny which is making my head spin. I sipped to taste test again, coffee was delicious as always. Then I thought of a possible collision of a big truck in the neighborhood. By then my husband was running down from upstairs asking me, "Was that an earthquake?" My immediate response: "no."
Looking back I chuckle at the certainty of an answer from a person who've never experienced an earthquake in their life.
It was an earthquake. My husband knew it instantly, it was his third earthquake experience.
It was shocking. The experience of the ground below shaking is wildly different and scary.
However, people's reaction to it was even more astonishing. From politics, religion, climate change, to dooms day connection of the earthquake shook me more than the earthquake.
All societies die, history has shown us that with the fall of kingdoms and empires. Common indicators of dying societies may look like,
Wars. Increase in crimes
Degradation of living standard
Not believing in science. Disease, Medicine, Eclipse etc.
And some more
If you look at it closely, all indicators are due to the lack of skill of thinking. Society Dies if we Do Not Think.
In a society, individuals who can evaluate information and arguments presented to them, identify biases and misinformation, and make informed decisions affect their lives and the lives of those around them. Thinking helps us to define and organize experiences, plan, learn, reflect and build new things. Build our society.
It took me an hour to come out of the shock from an earthquake. Peoples reaction to the earthquake was a bigger shock which is lingering more.
Society dies if we do not think. #CriticalThinkingMindset
