Haircut Vs Tattoos
90% of my conversations at work and when I am coaching are about making decisions. Either helping someone navigating through decision making process or going myself through it.
Doing this countless times I've realized one major characteristic of decision making,
There is no limit to expected information to be sure about the decisions
Future is unpredictable. And we all have hard time accepting it. We are always on a lookout for more information, different ways to ensure certainty of an outcome.
It slows us down.
What difference does it make having 75% information vs 90% to the outcome?
Jeff Bazoz compared decision making using one-way and two way door. One way door represents decisions that are irreversible or difficult to reverse. Two way door represents decisions that are reversible.
I like to share the analogy of haircut vs tattoo. A bad haircut is tough to come out of, but will happen eventually. Tattoo is a long term, expensive to recover from decision. What kind decision you are taking? based on that, collect the information and go for it. No amount of information is going to give you 100% certainty.
Fast decision making is a competitive advantage. Break myths to move forward, faster. Fast decision making is not being reckless.
Avoid analysis paralysis by choosing to collect only useful information.
If you know the end game, take a decision. Change the direction based on periodic review.
Making a decision with 75% information and then checking periodically for change in direction is more effective than waiting for 90% information. #ActionMindset
Life lessons that you can’t afford to ignore.
How to get more done?
After Rich Tale’s last issue, many people asked, "how do you manage a full time job, coaching, and writing a newsletter?" apart from living a life ;)
My answer. Systems. Hope. and a lot of coffee.
My first job was as a Business Intelligence Analyst. It strongly aligned with my skills and curiosity for data and questions. With the nature of job that required building business insights dashboard for C-Suite, I got to learn systems way of thinking. Anything that's repeatable, I start thinking about how to make it sustainable to run in a long term? And anything unavoidable, how to make it tad bit enjoyable?
For work, I prioritize ruthlessly and have clear get things done list, that is no more than 4 things.
For coaching projects, there is schedule created for 6 months to 1 year engagement along with resources that are available to my clients.
For newsletter, I maintain a steady pipeline of ideas, links, and content.
There are countless articles, frameworks available for productivity. Those only work when you execute. Knowledge is rarely the problem, its the action that counts.
Everyday I hope that things will work the way I've planned. God gets many laughs, believe me. But baselining my mindset to the favorable outcome, guides most my actions. And that helps me get things done.
Coffee is my magical potion. If you've haven't figured yours yet, now is the time.
You've got this!
